Treating acne is not easy and requires multiple attack plans to properly overcome it without permanent scars. Photodynamic therapy (PDT for short) is a non-surgical acne treatment that uses blue LED light to activate a medication called 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA).

PDT with ALA can effectively treat mild to moderate acne in as little as 4-8 treatments. LED therapy known as PDT uses aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and blue light (~410 nm wavelength).

The effect of blue light on acne is very modest but improves over time when preceded by ALA application. PDT involves two protocols, i.e. incubation time (how long ALA is left on the skin) and exposure time (how long the client spends in front of the blue light source).

This treatment treats acne-prone skin by shrinking sebaceous glands and reducing bacteria colonies responsible for acne.

Blue LED light with ALA penetrates the dermis to kill bacteria that cause acne (P. acnes). P. acnes bacteria can grow in hair follicles and cause inflammation that clogs pores and turns into inflamed pimples. It also works to shrink the sebaceous (oil-producing) glands in the skin.

This reduces acne by reducing the amount of oil in each pore (acne bacteria thrive on oil.) It is recommended to stay away from bright light sources such as sunlight, bright indoor lighting and a computer screen for the first 48 hours
